Subject: SEALAB Request for Research Proposals FY1989

SEALAB is pleased to announce that funding is available to fund research projects on any deep sea, oceanographic, geological topic as it pertains to Pacific Ocean resources and economic development.

Applicant Eligibility and Proposal Deadlines

The SEALAB grants program is open to all applicants in the United States and territories. SEALAB will not be funding projects external to the United States.

SEALAB invites proposals from all applicants. SEALAB particularly encourages engineers, geologists, farmers, and researchers to consider applying for funding. Many of these independent professional will find a great advantage to working with the expert staff deployed with the SEALAB.

The deadline for proposals is October 31, 1988. Any proposals not postmarked by this date will be ineligible for FY89 funding grants.Funding decisions will be made and applicants will be notified of these determinations by December 31, 1988.

Funding Levels

SEALAB is proud to announce that cooperative efforts are allowing for more deep sea research funding than ever before. Approved research grants may alloted up to a value of $200,000. Joint funding from other entities is encouraged and will not jeopardize eligibility or acceptance.

Research Site

SEALAB will be deploying a multi-person deep sea habitat designed explicitly for conducting scientific research. The habitat will be deployed at a location in the Pacific Ocean near Guam and the Mariana Trench.

Proposal Requirements

The primary audience for your research proposal is the SEALAB Board of Directors. These individuals have a wide range of expertise. Outside reviewers will be included if additional expertise is needed. Limit the abstract of the proposal to one page and the body of the entire proposal to 6 pages. This limitation is strictly enforced to ensure fairness. Proposals that surpass the page limit or otherwise do not meet these requirements will not be considered for funding. Appendices may be used only for literature citations and CVs of primary investigators. No CV should exceed two pages in length.
