1162- Tradition of Carnival begins
1204- Venice sacks Byzantium and brings home the spoils ,last till 1261.
1268- Carnival is adopted as annual tradition
1295- Marco Polo returns to Venice with tales from the Silk Road and the lands to the East
1315 – Venetian Golden Book of the Nobility lists most influential families, allowing themselves exclusive membership in the Great Council.
1348- Plague hits Venice and leaves population decimated, 50,000 (25-50% of pop.)
1378- Appearance of Halley’s comet
1405- Venetian takeover of Padua and Verona
1453- Muslim raiders cripple Venice trade beginning with the fall of Constatinople
1490- First print shop opened in Venice; Venice printing hub of the region
1495 – League of Venice created to oust France from Italy
1508 – League of Cambrai created to curb Venetian influence in northern Italy
1570- Venetian population reaches highest point of 190,000
