O’Brien Speaks Out Against Communist Allegations

Wednesday, January 9, 1963

“Attorney General O’Brien has issued a statement regarding allegations of being a communist sympathizer after rumors circulated about going-ons with Cuban performer Hugh Baille.”

“ ‘I am not, and have never been a so-called Communist sympathizer. I would never betray my American values in such a way. I regret that fear has taken hold of this country in such a way that a discourse between two dissimilar people is scrutinized so harshly and judgements are being passed with no proof of any wrongdoing. It bears repeating. I am not and have never been involved with the Communist party or any of its agents in the United States.’ “
