My husband and I yap it up about beer, a lot. He works in the ‘biz’ and I swear I get used as a beer guinea piggy more than I’d like to. I do tend to like wheat beer. Poured in a glass, it never looks as pretty as other beer- its cloudy its foggy – but ya’ know what? For a country girl, it’s not about how pretty it looks in a glass- it’s about taste.
Summer wheat beer often gets infused with fruit flavors. I’m really partial to strawberry and heck I don’t even like blueberries, but I enjoy blueberry flavored things. I’ve enjoyed peach and apricot flavors in beer, too. But when my husband wanders home with a can of Hell of High Watermelon Wheat Beer from the 21st Amendment Brewery I was skeptical. Beer? And Watermelon? Who puts these flavors together? At a summer picnic you should enjoy a slice of watermelon and a bottle of beer. I wasn’t sure if watermelon beer in a can was just a time saver or what?
I will stand firm on the fact that I think beer tastes funny out of a can. I also tend to think nori and overripe spinach taste very metallic as well- so I think my palate is just sensitive to metallic in my food. I took a couple sips straight from the can and originally puckered and was ready to be done with it altogether. But I decided to put my big girl britches on, pour the beer in my own glass and give it another shake.
The Hell or High Watermelon Wheat is a very light golden color. Off the top of my head I think I’d compare it to Blue Moon- but replace all of the citrus flavor from a Blue Moon with the sweet yumminess of watermelon. And really, the best part is the lack of seeds you have to spit out as you enjoy it. This isn’t a beer I will be adding to my regular household rotation, but if you are bringing something for a late summer barbeque- you should totally show up with this brew under one arm and a watermelon under the other. It’s a fun, well-made novelty beer.
